	第二屆船到橋頭生活節將於今年11月舉行，現公開徵集計畫，以納入生活節中。
我哋歡迎島民、藝術家、設計師、環保人士、歷史學家、人類學家、手工者、建築師和任何受到島嶼啟發嘅人申請，亦非常歡迎新舊島民同我哋集思廣益，尋找生活節不同計畫的合適地點。


	The second edition of the Festival is coming this November 2023, and we are now calling for projects!

We encourage island residents, artists, designers, environmentalists, historians, anthropologists, crafts-wo-men, architects, and anyone inspired by the islands’ spirit to apply. We are particularly eager to receive ideas from current or past residents of locations.

Overview


	第二屆船到橋頭生活節2023會繼續關注離島生活，但同時會延伸到島與島之間的空間——連島海 。

人類常把遼闊無際的海洋看作是一片可以被任意改造、不斷地被開發利用的荒蕪，實際上，海洋承載著一個生命、物質和流動的複雜系統，包含非人類和人類的活動。海洋同時也在塑造相互關聯又獨特的島嶼生態系統。讓我們把目光從陸地轉移到海洋，了解我們與周邊海域的聯繫之深度和多樣性，體會到尋找平衡的居住方式的緊迫性，以求同我們的環境和它的眾多居民——我們非人類鄰居建立健康的關係。

透過與本土的、科學的和創意的不同角度之間的交流與合作，我們希望呈現那些珍視香港大自然的人的聲音，了解他們如何探索一種尊重土壤與海洋的新的生活模式。


For this new edition, Inter-island Festival 2023 continues to focus on island life, but extends to include the space between the islands — the Inter-island Sea. 

Often perceived as a vast emptiness that can be morphed arbitrarily and exploited incessantly for human benefit, the sea hosts an intricate system of lives, materials, and flows of non-human and human-generated processes. The sea also plays a vital role in shaping the correlated and distinctive ecosystems of the islands. Shifting our perspectives from the land to the sea is essential to understand the depth and multiplicity of relations that tie us to surrounding water bodies, and the urgency to seek balanced ways of inhabiting territories, and to establish healthy relations with our environment and its numerous residents–our non-human neighbours. 

Through the exchange and collaboration between vernacular, scientific, and imaginative viewpoints, we want to give voice to those who value the natures of Hong Kong and want to explore new ways of living that respect the soil and the sea we touch.

地點：坪洲、長洲、梅窩、芝麻灣各處以及連島海
	Period: 4 weekends in November 2023

	計劃書可以個人、組合或團體名義提交。每個單位可提交多於一份計劃書，以英文或中文書寫。

請填妥此Google Form，於2023年5月17日（星期三）上午0時1分至2023年6月18日（星期日）下午11時59分提交。逾期提交將不受理。

	An application can be submitted by a person or a group. Each person or group can submit more than one proposal in either English or Chinese. We welcome English so all our team members can see : )
Please fill in the Google Form from 00:01 of 17 May 2023, Wednesday to 23:59 of 18 June 2023, Sunday, Hong Kong time (GMT+8). Late submission will not be considered.


	準則
Criteria


	計劃若有以下特點為佳：無障礙 ：題材貼地、平易近人、好玩，令不同的島民都能夠參與。
島上人才：現居住在生活節其中一個地方的個人/團體，或曾在其中一個或者多個地方工作過的個人/團體。
社區參與：從製作階段到節目呈現，與當地團體或學校合作緊密合作。
	The Festival would particularly like to see projects that cover one (or more) of the following:Accessibility: down-to-earth, accessible yet playful proposals to be enjoyed by the diversity of island residents;&#38;nbsp;Island talents: individuals / groups who live or work in one or more of the locations of the Festival;&#38;nbsp;
Community involvement: collaboration with local organizations or schools from production phase to Festival presentation;

Suggested Themes&#38;nbsp;

	離島生活：探討離島生活——歷史、社交、文化；連島海：
船到橋頭生活節的主題。島嶼連接：研究現有的海上連接或提議生活節期間可能的海上連接。非人類：採用以非人類為中心的路徑，或以構成我們環境的非生物角度出發，為居住在同一片土地的其他物種發展空間。
岩石生態：研究島際海岸岩石棲息地和其棲息動物。
離島音樂和表演：研究本地具體種類的歷史和發展。

	Life on the islands: enquire specific aspects of life on the islands–history, social, cultural;&#38;nbsp;The Inter-island sea: theme of Inter-Island Festival 2023;Island connections: explore the existing or new bridging paths;&#38;nbsp;Non-humans: adopt new viewpoints to give space for other species residing in this territories;Rocky-shore ecology: work on these habitats and their inhabitants;Island music and performance: investigate the history and development of specific genre on the region;Borders: investigate boundaries, from the visible border between land/sea to the limits of the humanly-accessible territory;Navigation: work on the different ways to read the sea/land-scape.

	不限，可以是導賞團、工作坊、裝置、表演、遊戲等；
若計劃是個活動，須考慮時間及場次；
若計劃是件實體作品，須考慮如何讓作品於生活節期間保留；

	Media is not limited, 
e.g. tour, workshop, installation, performance, game, etc;Event-based projects: please consider the time and number of slots to cater both island residents and visitors;
Object-based projects: 
please consider a set up that could ideally stay for the whole period.

	不限，但更歡迎小規模的計劃。
以暫時性和靈活為佳。

	生活節會為四個地點共選出20個計劃，最終遴選數量會根據計劃的地點、資源和類別而定。
	Around 20 projects for all locations; the final number of selections will be based on the locations, resources, and the varieties of the proposals.

	About the Festival 關於生活節
	船到橋頭生活節是一個藝術和生活結合的活動，借助坪洲、梅窩、芝麻灣和長洲之間現有的橫水渡連接，慶祝並呈現香港沿海生活豐富多樣的文化。
生活節旨在加強島嶼社區之間的聯繫，推廣坪洲、梅窩、芝麻灣和長洲之間獨特的文化，倡導對島嶼自然特徵及陸地和海洋中生物多樣性的尊重。我們希望為島嶼緩慢而平衡的未來開創一條道路。
我們認為節日的目標是需要持續不斷的努力才能實現的長期努力，因此我們舉辦兩年一次的藝術和生活節活動，提醒居民他們所居住的獨特地方的存在。在節日期間，島上居民可以參與各種活動（旅遊、工作坊、表演），參觀鄰近社區，以自己的方式慶祝海邊生活。
船到橋頭生活節2023是由坪洲 Islanders島民、葉啟俊、Jimmie Lu；長洲渡日書店；麻灣Miko Yeung；梅窩Vibe 書店 聯合發起
	Inter-Island Festival is an art and life event that borrows the existing inter-island ferry connection between Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Chi Ma Wan and Cheung Chau, to celebrate and build upon the rich and varied cultures of living by the sea in Hong Kong. 


The Festival aims at strengthening the bounds between island communities, promoting the unique cultures that develop in the inter-island region, and advocate for respect for the islands’ natural characteristics and the diverse non-human communities living on land and in the sea. We hope to shape a path for a common future on the islands.

With long-term objectives, the Festival is organised as a bi-annual art and life event that reminds residents of the unique place where they live. During the Festival, island residents can engage in various activities (tours, workshops, performances), visit neighbouring communities and celebrate life by the sea in their own way.
Inter-island Festival is initiated by Peng Chau residents Myriem Alnet, Chan Chun-kit and Yip Kai-chun, with:- Cheung Chau:&#38;nbsp;渡日書店 to-day bookstore;- Chi Ma Wan: Miko Yeung;
- Mui Wo:&#38;nbsp;VIBE Book and Music Shop (Gary Brightman &#38;amp; Cary Nicholson);- Peng Chau: Jimmie Lu.

 
	2021 Edition
簡介
	首屆船到橋頭生活節2021年3月26日至28日舉行，重點關注這些島嶼的藝術、傳統、自然和城鄉環境。超過50位合作夥伴舉辦了40多個活動，如旅遊、工作坊、裝置藝術、表演、開放日和放映會。島上居民是組織者、參與者、志願者和捐助者。超過10,000人參加了節日。

該節日由香港藝術發展局、信研設計大使、伍集成文化教育基金會和島上支持者提供資助。


	The first Inter-island Festival took place on 26–28 March 2021, and focused on the art, tradition, nature and urban-rural environments of these islands. More than 50 collaborators held over 40 activities, such as tours, workshops, installations, performances, open houses and screenings. Residents of the islands were organisers, participants, volunteers and donors. Over 10,000 participants joined the Festival.

It was funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council, Hong Kong Design Trust, C.C.Wu Foundation, and island supporters.

Inter-island Festival: Here we go again!


Finally, COVID-19 has slightly weakened and everything gets more relaxed, so it’s time: the Inter-island Festival will be relaunched in 26-28 March! 
Having postponed for twice, we have gained the experience that every window needs to be captured swiftly and tightly. That’s the reason why we decided to go for late March once we confirmed with our collaborators and sponsors. We apologise for the short notice and still hope to see you on the islands!

Welcome on board!


During 3 days, the Inter-island Festival sails in between Peng Chau, Mui Wo, Chi Ma Wan and Cheung Chau to celebrate our dear island life. With more than 50 collaborators from our islands and beyond, we offer a variety of activities for everyone to dive into the local life and embrace its subtle cosiness.

Fellow islanders, we hope you can take a break and appreciate with a fresh eye this familiar place you call home. 

If you can spare the time, try to take the ferry and visit our neighbours! It’s always good to pay a visit to each other and remember what makes us and our culture so special.

And you dear visitor, is this your first time travelling on the inter-island ferry? Take a seat and let the flow guide you to the essence of the island life and the beauty of our landscapes. As you wander around, run into residents who are most friendly when their lifestyles and environment are respected.

Whether you are an islander or not, we hope you can all come together to appreciate, defend and further develop this treasurable character.

	1. What is a “Life Festival” (as the Chinese title suggests)? 

It is a Festival about the insular life: its distinct environments, communities, histories and concerns, and the exchanges among and beyond these islands. Insular life is the inspiration, the essence and what we want to strengthen and enrich. We think calling this event a 'Life Festival' reminds and reflects our intent.


2. Small islands and art: You wanna be Setouchi?

When it comes to small islands Festival, we all have Setouchi in mind, which generally aims at revitalising abandoned islands. The context of the inter-island area is quite different: the islands are alive and blooming and that completely influences the shape and modus operandi of the Festival. Subtly, the Festival intends to use art as a medium to invite residents themselves and visitors to dive deep into the insular life.


3. What are the highlights?

Chairs, buffalos, tricycles, zi zaat pavilions, trees, you name it! They appear most suited to reveal our islands’ ordinary culture. Our collaborators are architects, artists, illustrators, performers and local organisations who will play with this culture and showcase it in an original way.&#38;nbsp;


4. How to join? How will the Festival work?

Some specific activities, such as workshops and tours, require your advanced registration, while others welcome walk-ins. Activities will be going on at the four locations at the same time. You can simply mix and match activities depending on your interests and schedule. Take the time to explore the islands on your own and look for hints of a peculiar lifestyle… (check out our maps of the islands :)) The activities are scheduled to match the inter-island ferry times for you to hop from one island to another more easily in a day. Try to stay on the islands for a day or even more to better experience the insular life. We hope you can really try!


5. What is so special about the islands?

Outer islands are isolated pieces of lands mostly connected by ferries (less for Mui Wo). This isolation nurtures distinct urbanscapes, nature and cultures on each of these islands. What makes them stand out from most other islands is their relative closeness and connectedness to the city centre - Central is less than an hour away by ferry! This easy-to-reach isolation and preservation of nature is yet another wonder of Hong Kong that really deserves recognition - one of the reasons why we want to put up this Festival. 


6. Festivals are just consumerist events. How can you hope to foster change with a Festival?

Inter-Island Festival wants to draw its own direction by anchoring into local grounds, revealing local strengths and building from them. It brings local residents, actors, organisations, and others to meet and start new collaborations, paving the way for traditions to adapt to contemporary needs and have a future.


7. What is your position towards gentrification?

We cannot stop a river from flowing, but we can divert its bed.

As the islands become more visible, they attract flocks of new residents, rental prices rise and the local spirit seem to vanish away. We cannot stop people from moving in, but we believe we can show them how to appreciate and adapt to the local culture, and build a common awareness for all residents to participate and benefit from it.

8. So you wanna have more tourists on these islands huh?

The islanders - those who live on these islands - are our primary beneficiaries and the activities we plan aim to strengthen the connections on each island and between them.

We are aware the islands are becoming a more popular destination for tourists, and residents may have adverse feelings towards this. Rather than rejecting the tourists (which is not so feasible), we propose to invite them to consider the islands’ own cultures, environments and respect their specific lifestyles. By hopping from one island to another, we can (re)discover invaluable landscapes and seascapes and the people who live by them. We believe it is important for non-islanders to have an opportunity to change their perspective on Hong Kong’s extremely diversified nature, lifestyles, cultures, and tourism, for its leisurely and relaxed nature, can be an efficient medium. &#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;

	
9. Why do this?
We want people to embrace and understand the values of the insular life by actually experiencing it. We call for people on these islands and in the city to contribute to the protection of this insular culture in their own ways.


10. Who are you? Who is behind?

We are three Peng Chau Kai Fongs who have lived on Peng Chau for a few years.  Seeing the changes happening now and in the future, we would like to organise a festival to connect everyone.

	Inter-island Festival is initiated by Myriem Alnet, Chan Chun-kit and Yip Kai-chun.&#38;nbsp; They have lived on Peng Chau for a few years.

Myriem is an urbanist; Kit is one of the founders of Sun Sat Store on Peng Chau; and Chun is an artist-curator.&#38;nbsp; Kit and Myriem have founded ‘ISLANDERS’, a zine on the island cultures, and Chun has organised small-scale art events on Peng Chau before.&#38;nbsp; 

They want to take one step further to contribute to the islands.
