Come speak some local Water Dialect!
Cheung Chau Wave
Did you know the names ‘Hong Kong’ and ‘Macau’ come from Water Dialect水話 (seoi2 waa2)? With hundreds of years of history, Water Dialect is spoken by the Tankas or 水上人 (seoi2 soeng6 jan4) “on-water people” – indigenous fishermen and boat dwellers from the Southern coasts of China.
Come learn some local Water Dialect and Cantonese, and practice with the sampan drivers and fishermen. In this collaboration, Sarah Yip from Eco Cheung Chau/Floatudio works with the local fishing communities in Cheung Chau and Hong Kong’s neighbouring islands, and Tiff Chan’s intuitive method Chantoneasy® enables tonal languages to be spoken by visually and physically associating all words with musical notes.

Besides your idle items, there are many more ‘intangible’ things worthwhile sharing in the community. This event hopes to create a platform, as well as a stage, for everybody to experience, appreciate and treasure the homeliness of Cheung Chau.

Expressive Arts Life
Tired of your solo aerobics routine at home? We feel you. How about joining us for a special movement session at a public sports ground against the beautiful horizon of Cheung Chau? Don’t be shy! Shake your body out! Before you realise, you’ll have made new friends from all walks of life, connected with yourself on a deeper level, and refreshed your energy with the gifts of nature.
The 2-hour session will be facilitated by an Expressive Art Therapist with warm up exercise, basic dance steps and improvisational dance with music. It is safe, easy to follow and suitable for people with little or no experience in dance.

Encounter Cheung Chau
Hong Kong Public Space Initiative
Cheung Chau, an island with looping roads and alleys, is woven into an improvised living room of the community. Wandering in the labyrinth of alleys, people will eventually encounter friends and peers. These anticipated encounters are spontaneous and temporal, capturing encounter opportunities to appropriate space. Islanders’ everyday life is constituted of this distinctive social logic of space to create organic public space. Wherever there are people and islander, there is public space.
In September 2020, we encountered different faces and stories about the island. Documenting the interaction of residents, with tracking, annotated images over time, ambient sound and story, we present a multi-sensorial perception of Cheung Chau’s everyday life, unveiling the vibrant public life of Cheung Chau. We now invite you, and all Cheung Chau lovers to be a guest in the virtual living room of Cheung Chau.

Encounter Cheung Chau: Dak Haan Yum Cha
Hong Kong Public Space Initiative
In Cheung Chau, an island with looping roads and alleys, you will eventually encounter friends and peers when you are wandering for long enough. Wherever people are encountered, ad-hoc, mobile public space/realm is temporarily formed, particularly under the comfort of authentic nylon shade. Islanders’ everyday life as social process then forms organic, free-flowing public space.
Inspired by the Cantonese greeting “Dak Haan Yum Cha” when people encounter, literally meaning “let’s grab a tea when you are free”, mobile tea pavilion realises the common saying into spontaneous place of interaction anywhere on the island. The mobile pavilion is modelled after Cheung Chau’s authentic way of transit – bicycles and local wisdom of nylon shade for homes and restaurants, resembling islanders’ fluid public space usage and catalysing people’s spontaneous public life.

Encounter Cheung Chau: Sketch to Encounter
Hong Kong Public Space Initiative
Casually walk into a local shop in Cheung Chau, discover the story behind the owner(s) and explore various possibilities of lifestyle. Capturing all sorts of happenings and events through collecting materials from local shops and creating participants’ own Masterpieces. During the downswifting process, participants slow down, co-create and record their experiences in Cheung Chau.

Island art: Discovering the artist studio and showroom of chaussette b.

Step into one of Cheung Chau’s typical 50s house for an interactive immersion in chaussette b. studio. She will let you know more about her paintography process and her current mix media work using materials such as bamboo, steam basket, fishnet… mainly sourced locally in Cheung Chau.
Around 40 artworks of chaussette b. will be exhibited during the Festival. Come discover the stories behind each of them!
